A Chinese friend of mine who had been active in the democracy movement explained how [Chinese political and legal -- but not political -- reforms] changed his outlook:
"Before Tienanmen, we believed that freedom is 90 percent political and 10 percent economic. A few years later, we came to realize that real freedom is 90 percent economic and 10 percent political."
